PROPERTY FOR SALE IN FRANCE - AREA by AREA

Property for sale in France varies as you travel around the country, as do property prices. On this page, we aim to give a rough idea of the most typical type of property for sale in France in each area as well as some of the main of features of each area.

Property for sale in France - Brittany

One of France's most rugged regions, Brittany is a fascinating mix of spectacular coastline, ancient towns, magical islands and inland woodlands. No longer cheap.
The most typical Brittany property is the granite longere farmhouse

Property for sale in France - Normandy

Generally the landscape is one of rolling fields, rocky coastline and some gorges and small peaks. The coastline is dotted with tourist resorts and fishing villages. Reasonably priced.
The most typical normandy property is a single storey colombage property, with a steeply pitched roof.

Property for sale in France - Vendee/Charente

The coastline is made up of long sandy beaches Inland the landscape is quite flat and is used for farming and wine growing. This makes it a great region for cycling.Fairly expensive.
A typical property in the area is a 2 storey limestone or rendered farmhouse, under a red tiled roof

Property for sale in France - Dordogne

Named after France's most beautiful river.
In the North of the area are green pastoral valleys, with trickling streams. The centre of the department is the 'White Périgord', thus named because of its limestone plateaux. Further south is the bastide country with fortified towns, castles and chateaux built by both the English and the French, and also stretches of oak forest. Expensive.
The most typical property is the pale limestone farmhouse, with its distinctive 'pigeonnier' or dovecote

Property for sale in France - Burgundy

The home of some of the world's best wines. But also a great place to stroll through medieval towns, explore a countryside dotted with castles and ancient churches as well as vines, and to try barging on the many canals. Still affordable with plenty of properties to renovate..
The most typical property is an old stone farmhouse with steep pitched tile roof.

Property for sale in France - Pyrennees

Magnificent mountain scenery to the north and south and the high plateau of the Causses in the NE. This is a land of plains dotted with hills, moors and pine woods, desolate plateaux, and little valleys covered with forests. Reasonably affordable.
A typical pyrennean property is a 2 storey colombage farmhouse with pan tiled roof or a rough stone terraced village cottage.

Property for sale in France - Aude,Herault

Stretching along the Mediterranean, providing a fantastic coastal setting and inland to lazy acres of wheat fields and vineyards. Lower property prices than the neighbouring Riviera.
A typical Langedoc property is a tall, narrow stone village house - or a modern apartment in on of the new built 'holiday'villages on the coast.

Property for sale in France - French Riviera

Well known for its crystal clear sea, hills rising behind, dotted with villages clinging to the rock.
Property is not cheap in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. In fact, it is the second most expensive region to live in after Paris. The most typical property would probably be a luxury villa or apartment in a modern development

Property for sale in France - Provence

A varied province - with vast plains, filled with lavender fields, high mountains covered in ski trails and picturesque villages and unspoilt countryside. You will need a deep pocket.
The most typical provencal property must be the Mas, a stone built 2 storey farmhouse with a terracotta roof.

Property for sale in France - Limousin

Limousin has an unspoilt, rural environment. Perfect for a quiet, relaxed life.
Cheap properties can still be found. A typical Limousin farmhouse is fairly long and low, often with plenty of outbuildings.

Property for sale in France - French Alps

With orld-class skiing resorts and picturesque mountain villages, the area has a beautiful natural landscape - lakes, rivers and towering mountains. Think Switzerland -and very expensive property.
The ski lodge, with wooden balconies and steeply pitch rooves are typical.

Property for sale in France - The Loire

The Loire region is home to the famous chateaux, interesting cities and of course the Loire valley. The temperate climate means the area is very green, with and peaceful, rolling farmland. The area also contains some of France's best property bargains.
A typical property is the longere, in local tuffeau or traditional 'crepi' render.
